Remembering the Footballers’ Battalion: Fulham Town Hall, Monday 15th December

12th December, 2014

The Trust was recently contacted by Steve Jenkins of Leyton Orient Supporters Club.

“A big date is coming up next week – Monday 15th December. This is the centenary of the meeting at Fulham Town Hall which was arranged to assist with recruiting footballers into the 17th Middlesex – the Footballers’ Battalion.

With all the commemorations being undertaken by the FA and the Football League, I was surprised no-one had given this date a thought, to that end I have subsequently contacted Hammersmith & Fulham council and am extremely proud to have obtained permission to hold a ceremony in the town hall to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this very important meeting. However, numbers are extremely limited due to the town hall currently being renovated.

Crystal Palace had two players enlist at that meeting in 1914 – James Bowler and William Middleton

Despite the restrictions on numbers we cordially invite a Palace supporter to ‘join up’ with us next Monday to help us commemorate these brave footballers.

Proceedings are due to begin at 8pm.

Fulham Town Hall is immediately opposite Fulham Town Hall station which is on the District Line and it would be great to have your club represented on this very special and historic anniversary.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.”

Please contact the Trust as soon as possible if you wish to attend this very special occasion.
